Our Story

Family is at the heart of baking at The 1066 Bakery

Started as a small local bakery in 1950 by Harold and Betty Robertson, the bakery, with the shop above was situated in Castlehill Road, in the shadow of the historic Hastings Castle, providing freshly baked breads, cakes and pastries to the community, with a small wholesale round to local shops and markets. Son, Malcolm followed in the footsteps of his father and started working in the company aged 14 and eventually took over the business in 1972. He expanded the wholesale and subsequently opened a new bakery shop in Hastings Arcade. To enable further expansion they needed a bigger bakery. In 1990, the moved to custom built premises in Saint Leonards-on-Sea.

During the late 90s, the third generation were made directors of the company. The directors’ commitment to building upon their family roots meant further expansion, totalling 5 outlets. Sadly Malcolm died in a tragic sailing incident in 2009 and was unable to see the recent growth of his much loved business including a café operating from a renovated Double Decker Bus. His children Tara, Darren and Ben are committed to sourcing local produce and delivering quality bakery products. Family is very much at the heart of everything that The 1066 Bakery is and does. In 2014 the 4th generation of the family have become part of the bakery...and so the next chapter is being written!
